The problem with LED desk lights
A good desk lamp solves the brightness problem. It does not solve the spectrum problem. LEDs emit at specific wavelength peaks — typically a strong blue-white spike around 450–500 nm — but the spectral distribution is fixed. The same light at 8 AM as at 4 PM.
More lumens won't change this. Even a high-quality, high-CRI "daylight" LED delivers a static signal to your body: the same colour temperature, the same spectral shape, hour after hour. Your circadian system, however, evolved to read a very different kind of light.
What your body actually needs from light
Your circadian system is tuned to solar time, not office hours. Morning sunlight carries a high proportion of short-wave blue light (~480 nm) that suppresses melatonin and triggers the cortisol awakening response — the biological equivalent of a "start your day" signal. As the sun rises higher, the spectrum broadens. By mid-afternoon, warm wavelengths (reds, oranges) increase. This shift signals your body to begin preparing for rest — hours before you actually go to bed.
An LED that never changes doesn't send these signals. It leaves your circadian system in a state of spectral ambiguity: always "morning" or always "noon", depending on colour temperature — but never actually following the day.
Why "full-spectrum" LEDs still fall short
Full-spectrum LEDs are better than standard LEDs, but they remain static. They emit a broader spectral distribution, but it doesn't change as the day progresses. The key biological signal is not just the spectrum — it's the dynamic change. Real sunlight changes continuously in intensity, colour temperature and spectral composition. Your photoreceptors are calibrated to detect that change, and they use it to anchor the internal clock.
Tunable white LEDs come closer: you can program a warmer morning setting and a cooler midday one. But even these approximations are discrete steps, not continuous gradients, and they require software to mimic what the sun delivers for free.
